#00. Cotton & Sustainability: can we be honest?

Cotton is under scrutiny, more than ever. Fuelled by recent publications, particularly Apparel Insider’s latest “Cotton Claims: in search of the truth”, many colleagues asked me to share my opinion, as if I was an expert! I’ve been holding back from being vocal about my opinion because I am not and I will never feel like an expert in this field: the complexity hides infinite layers. But… As an independent generalist who specialises in sustainable fashion and cotton, I could still confidently navigate the subject to a certain degree of depth and push to go deeper.

Moving forward, I would like to share my thoughts to open and facilitate an honest conversation here, proactively encouraging discussion and constructive feedback to unfold a shared solutions-finding learning path.

Let’s talk about:

  1. The cotton industry’s neo-colonialism: 'The West's White Aid'

  2. Conventional vs organic: a counterproductive polarization

  3. Standards’ collaboration hypocrisy

  4. Data accuracy & transparency: the failure of measuring savings vs impact & the need for comparable data 5.Regenerative ag: carbon sequestration opportunities & risks
