COTTON DIARIES

#01. How can we create a space for data interpreters (and their commissioners) to be more transparent?

I am not a data analyst, but neither are the majority of the people that read reports. I rely on information being interpreted for me.

Lately, I’ve been finding it increasingly hard to trust data interpretation in #cotton & #sustainability reports. I often feel that I get fed the ‘positives’, in BIG BOLD NUMBERS and simplified executive summary conclusions, whilst the interpretation of the ‘negatives’ is left to a short sentence, a tiny paragraph or an * at the end of the page.

In this race towards having quick answers & ready-made simple solutions in cotton, there is little room for complexity to untangle, for opening (unanswered) questions... But isn’t it in the challenge where the best solutions are born?

But before questioning data interpreters' space…

I’d like to reflect on their commissioners: ‘How can we create a safe space for organisations to show their vulnerability, uncover the ‘not-so-good’ results, whilst keeping stakeholders’ confidence in them? What are the basic ingredients for this space to become real & effective?’
